The Ultimate 5-Week Freedom Ride: Our 2015 Campervan Road Trip
Pack your bags, roll down the windows, and get ready for a trip down memory lane to a time of pure, unfiltered freedom! In 2015, we set off on an epic, five-week campervan adventure that would take us across a massive loop of 8,000 kilometers (nearly 5,000 miles) through the wildest and most beautiful corners of Spain and Portugal.
We were a colorful crew of four: my partner at the time, Burghard (lovingly nicknamed Schnorkel), my 10-year-old son Felipe, his 14-year-old friend Felix, and me—the designated, unstoppable driver of our trusty camperbus.
The Golden Era of Wild Camping
What made our 2015 road trip so incredibly special was something that is nearly impossible to experience today: the absolute freedom to camp wherever we wanted. Back then, the strict laws against wild camping in Spain and Portugal hadn't been fully rolled out yet. We could park right on the edges of rugged sea cliffs, sleep under the stars in isolated mountain ranges, and wake up directly on pristine beaches without a care in the world. In fact, over the entire five weeks, we only stayed at an official campsite twice—and that was strictly to enjoy a long, thorough, and highly anticipated hot shower!
It was a journey of endless horizons, campfires, teenage energy, and the true spirit of life on the road. Fasten your seatbelts, because over the next few chapters, I’m taking you along for the ride!
