The Ultimate 5-Week Freedom Ride, Part II: Our 2016 Campervan Road Trip
Pack your bags, roll down the windows, and get ready for another journey down memory lane to a time of pure, unfiltered freedom! Following the incredible success of our previous adventure, we set off once again in 2016 on an epic, five-week campervan journey. Our wheels spun across a massive loop of another 8,000 kilometers, taking us through the wildest and most beautiful corners of France, Spain, and Portugal.
This time, we were a slightly smaller but just as colorful crew of three: my partner at the time, Burghard (lovingly nicknamed Schnorkel), my son Felipe—now a seasoned 11-year-old road tripper—and me, the designated, unstoppable driver of our trusty camperbus. However, this trip had a unique twist: Schnorkel had to fly back from Lisbon after just two weeks due to work, leaving my son and me to conquer the remaining three weeks of the open road as a dynamic mother-son duo.
The Last Days of the Golden Era of Wild Camping
What made our 2016 road trip so deeply unforgettable was that we were still blessed with something that is nearly impossible to experience today: the absolute freedom to camp wherever we wanted. Just like the year before, the strict laws against wild camping in Spain and Portugal hadn't been fully rolled out yet. We could park right on the edges of rugged sea cliffs, sleep under the stars, and wake up directly on pristine beaches without a care in the world. In fact, over the entire five weeks, we only stayed at an official campsite twice—and that was strictly to enjoy a long, thorough, and highly anticipated hot shower!
It was a journey of endless horizons, sudden challenges, and the true, raw spirit of life on the road.
