La Virgen de la Candelaria
Virgen del Socavon
(Virgen de la Candelaria)
The origens of the carnival go back to the late 18th century and the worship of the virgen del Socavon. Legend has it that an outlaw who lived in the area was mortally wounded, but was saved at the last moment by an unknown woman of great beauty. She turned out to be the Virgen de la Candelaria, whom the outlaw had worshipped in the cave where he lived. A century later, the church of the Virgen del Socavon (beloved Mother of the Mineshaft) and her feast was changed to Carnival Saturday, as it was on that day that she saved the outlaw.
The cult of the virgen del Socavon has gradually merged over the years with the worship of the devil or Supay Tio as he is knwon in these parts.
