The Roaring 20s - Berlin, Berlin (2021)

Picture

"I will work for wickedness, I will kill my heart, I will be shameless before all men, I will freely prostitute my body to all creatures."
The car's hood depicts Berlin during the Roaring Twenties—an era characterized by a level of openness, sexual freedom, and tolerance that few other European cities could match. Alongside Josephine Baker and Marlene Dietrich, the artwork features Claire Bauroff, Isadora Duncan, Lydia Thompson, Maud Allan, and Mata Hari—the latter also known as a spy who gathered intelligence for German intelligence services from clients in a brothel. Anita Berber was, alongside Marlene Dietrich, one of Germany's most famous dancers. Her risqué career, marked by a string of scandalous performances, was cut short by extreme drug abuse. Berlin was also known for its numerous prostitutes, catering to every taste and preference across the spectrum. At this point, I would also like to mention Kitty's Salon—a brothel that survived World War II, though only because it was exploited for espionage purposes.

La Goulue was a French can-can dancer who caused a sensation as early as the 19th century with her scandalous performances in black silk stockings. Loie Fuller was known as a serpentine dancer. She began her career in the USA, but did not achieve her breakthrough until the late 19th century with her dancing in Paris. Josephine Baker must also be mentioned here, as she enjoyed great success not only in Germany but also in Paris. Émilienne d’Alençon was active as a performer and known for her scandalous love affairs towards the end of the 19th century.

Burlesque also flourished in major U.S. cities such as New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The most famous performances included the *Ziegfeld Follies* on Broadway and the shows produced by the Minsky brothers in New York. Prominent burlesque entertainers—such as Della Carroll, Mae West, Sally Rand, Faith Bacon, Gypsy Rose Lee, Fanny Brice, Ann Corio, and Sherry Britton—must certainly be mentioned, alongside pioneers like Little Egypt, Lizzie Dark, and Pauline Markham, all of whom were regarded as rebellious women as early as the 19th century.
