One of my best friends in Mérida, Erik, is the proud owner of the "Nicaragua Quilt." He and his wife, Rosa, run a restaurant on Mérida’s main street. The food is as exquisite as their hospitality, and Erik is a great source of insider knowledge about the region. It is well worth a visit. It is worth noting that the quilt tells an impressive story about the country and people of Nicaragua—a story unfortunately unknown to most. I would like to list the key figures featured here: Augusto César Sandino, a famous and pivotal figure in the country during the 1930s; Ernesto Cardenal, a renowned priest who championed the poor and supported the artists of Solentiname; the author Gioconda Belli; the world-famous poets Rubén Darío and Pablo Antonio Cuadra; and the first female president, Violeta Chamorro. Sandino’s partner, Teresa Villatero, is also immortalized on the quilt, as are the proud female fighters of the Sandinistas.
